The Cape Breton West Islanders finished the preliminary round of the Telus Cup national midget hockey championship with a loss on Friday.

The Islanders took a 2-1 lead with a power play goal of their own by Timmons at 4:19 of the second period, but the Pat Canadians would tie the game thanks to a Matthew Chekay goal on the power play later in the period.

Adam Herold gave Regina a 3-2 lead around the halfway mark of the third period, before Jordan Kazymyra extended the Pat Canadians lead six minutes later. Chekay added an insurance goal late in the final frame, his second of the game, securing Regina’s win.

Nathan Moore made 19 saves for Regina. Colten Ellis stopped 38 of 42 shots for Cape Breton West.

The Telus Cup continues today with the semifinals scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. As of press time, it was unknown if the Islanders would play in one of the semifinal games.
