‘Viola Desmond’s Canada’ topic of library discussion
NORTH SYDNEY — On Wedneday, May 17, Dr. Graham Reynolds and Wanda Robson will hold a talk at the Wilfred Oram Centennial Library in North Sydney. The talk will discuss Reynolds’ book, “Viola Desmond’s Canada: A History of Blacks and Racial Segregation in the Promised Land.”
In 1946, Viola Desmond was wrongfully arrested for sitting in a whites-only section of the movie theatre in New Glasgow. In 2010, the Nova Scotia Government recognized the miscarriage of justice and granted her a free pardon.
Along with the discussion, Robson, who is the late Viola Desmond’s youngest sister, will also read from “The ABC’s of Viola Desmond,” a project from a class at William King Elementary School in Halifax. This event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The Cape Breton Post
