Cape Breton Post - - Obituaries -

It is with sad hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Adelaide “Addie” Nesterenko on Wednesday, May 10, 2017.

Addie was born in Sydney on November 20, 1927 to the late George and Lavina (Frost) Ferguson and was one of eleven children.

She will be forever loved and missed by her daughter, Heather and husband, Bill Machan of Skootamatta Lake, Ont.; grandchildren, Michelle (Gary) and Sarah (Geoff); great-grandchildren, Noah, Ethan, Will, Leah, Ellena and several nieces and nephews.

Addie was a true Cape Bretoner, yet during the 1940’s, she had to leave her beloved Sydney to find work in the factories of Ontario. It was in Toronto that she met and married WWII Veteran, Steve Nesterenko and together, through fierce, hard work, they lovingly raised and provided for their daughter, Heather. In retirement, they returned east to Saint John, N. B., where, after 35 years of marriage, Steve passed away from cancer. Addie returned to live in her beloved Cape Breton.

Besides her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her seven brothers, David, Phillip, Harold, Fraser, Charles, Roland and Donald and sisters, Georgie, Alice and Elsie.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Addie’s life will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel, 49 Welton St. on Friday, May 26, 2017 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin officiating. Following the service, interment will take place at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.

Donations to the local food bank would be appreciated.

The family would also like to acknowledge the loving care and support provided to Addie by the nurses, care givers and other staff of Pine Meadow Nursing Home.

Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www. sydneymemori or email sydneymemorialchapel@ ns.sympa
