Saturday’s rainy weather didn’t stop the Girl Guides of Canada Ceilidh Area from hosting its celebration of guides in North Sydney this weekend.

More than 500 guides came out to show their support for the event with ages ranging from five to 18-plus.

Starting at 11 a.m. at the Emera Centre, the guides paraded down King Street and High Street on their way to the Cape Breton County Exhibition grounds where the celebration took place.

The theme of the weekend event was Dream and Discover the Magic of Guiding. Activities included crafts with members of Cossit House, science experiments with students from Cape Breton University, active living and drama with the Kostume Kapers and a campfire and singalong.

The events at the exhibition grounds started with an open house for the general public with activities for the guides taking place throughout the day.

A public relations booth was also set up at the open house, giving new members the opportunity to register for the 2017-18 year.

“The main focus of this weekend is to try to increase membership in Girl Guides of Canada in the area,” said Gail Leighton, Ceilidh Area commissioner.

Those who register before June 7 will have the chance to win a gift certificate for the girl guides store as well as a oneyear free membership, valued at $100.

Leighton went on to talk about the importance of the event for the girl guides.

“Any camp is important for girls,” said Leighton. “It gives all girls the opportunity to camp outside. The younger girls see the example set by the older ones. It also gives them something to look forward to as they progress through the different branches of the girl guides. It gives them an incentive to stay in the organization.”

The campers stayed overnight, sleeping in tents with the event wrapping up on Sunday.
