The Cape Breton Regional Police is inviting the public to take part in the annual Cops Against Cancer campaign.

The campaign raises money to help those battling cancer in the local communities.

“All the money raised will stay locally to help the communities of Cape Breton,” said Const. Dwight Miller.

The annual hair buzz event is set for Friday, kicking off at 11:30 a.m. at Sobeys in Glace Bay. The event continues at Sobeys stores on Prince Street, Sydney at 1 p.m. and on King Street, North Sydney at 3 p.m.

Partnering with the regional police are Sobeys, the Nova Scotia Sherriff’s Department, Flavor restaurants and Max Radio.

The event will include barbecues and prizes at each site.

Cops Against Cancer is the local chapter of the national Cops for Cancer campaign that sees police and civilians shave their heads to raise awareness and money for those battling cancer.

Miller said police and some partnering organizations have pledge sheets to allow for donations, but the sheets are not given out to the general public.

“We don’t want people going door-to-door, that’s not what this is about.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation to Cops Against Cancer can go to one of the three sites on Friday, drop in to see Miller at the police station in Glace Bay or phone him at 902-563-5151.

He said organizers hope to raise more money than ever before as a way to honour Const. Mark Royal, who recently lost his battle with cancer at age 36.

“With the passing of Mark, who was the co-ordinator for this, we’re hoping to have a strong turnout in his memory as well as for other officers we lost.”
