It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmothe­r, greatgrand­mother, sister and friend Julia Florence but always known to her family as Sparky, on June 2, 2017. Julia was born in Florence on February 15, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Mary (Harris) Sommers.

Julia is survived by her children, Carl (Darlene), Bryce (Patricia), Lois (Scott), Samantha (Russel), Eldon (Karen), John Wayne (Michelle) and David (Lucinda). Julia leaves behind her grandchild­ren, Carl, Cory, Kara, Laura, Annie, Bryce, Kim, Lilly Anne, Kyle, Shaelyn, Hannah, Sophie and Ryder, and great-grandchild­ren, Tye, William, Karli, Payton, Gabe, Cate, Avery, Emma, Mackenzie, Maeva, Clara and Dawson. She is also survived by her only brother, Carl (Betty) Sommers, and sister-in-law, Bridget and Reggie Thurbide, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Julia was predecease­d by her son, Sheldon, and sisters, Celina Gale, Jen Mackinnon and Dora Sommers. Julia was best known for her amazing cooking and baking at Iris’s Restaurant in Bras d’Or.

Cremation has taken place. A visitation for Julia Florence Sommers will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6 at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, Sydney Mines, with a private family service to follow.
