Learning about food

-

Food security will be the topic of discussion when those involved in the Cape Breton food sector gather in Baddeck today.

The Island Food Network will host an event titled Getting Our Hands Dirty from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Bras d’Or Yacht Club. The meeting will give those in the food sector a chance to introduce their projects and develop an action plan.

Jody Nelson, community food co-ordinator for Ecology Action Centre, believes having an event to discuss food is an important step forward.

“Everyone has a stake in food, so it’s important to all of us, whether it’s talking about the security of our local food system or whether or not everybody has enough food to eat, I think we all have a roll to play,” said Nelson.

Island Food Network connects people from various sectors from all over the island including farmers, food and health organizations, educators and residents.

“We will give some background of what the network is and what other people are working on across the island based on some community engagement sessions that we held … through the winter,” said Nelson. “We’ve created an asset map with all the organizations and farms and everything that’s going on and we will have that up on our website for the public.”
