New site outlines Cape Breton arts and outdoor activities

A new online resource is set to guide people from their smartphones and desktop computers to Cape Breton’s endless outdoor opportunities.

The resource is called Cape Breton Connect and it’s considered an extensive database of summer programs, trails, community sports, arts and culture.

“It is really designed to get people active and get them out and enjoying what we have on the island,” said Wayne MacKay, the Cape Breton regional physical activity consultant for Communities, Culture and Heritage.

“This is where you can go and look and find where things are, what’s out there, how to get there and what it is all about. It really takes away that excuse of not knowing.” The online resource is the newest of five regions in the province that offers the connect service. It’s funded through a partnership of all municipalities and First Nations communities in Cape Breton.

During Friday’s official launch at the McConnell Library in Sydney, Chief Leroy Denny of Eskasoni First Nation spoke about its endless potential for positive outcomes.

“Sports and recreation brings communities together, it helps many children to address health needs,” he said.

“This type of thing is going to help many of our communities stay connected, to find out what is going on in your area or region.”

Elliot Frost, who was called a physical activity champion in Victoria County during the site launch, expects the new site to guide people to all parts of the island.

“It’s not only for healthy activities but we also do healthy eating in our areas,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how we can use this and make sure this develops even further for the people living in our areas, on Cape Breton and also for our visitors.”

Site partners will share the $2,200 cost per year for the website as well as the cost for data managers who will monitor it.
