Melski’s moment
Cape Breton filmmaker’s project to premiere in Shanghai
The latest project from Cape Breton filmmaker Michael Melski will be part of a prestigious Asian film festival.
The Child Remains, a supernatural thriller, has been made an official selection of the Shanghai International Film Festival from June 17-26.
“I’ve had films sell in Asia before but this will be my first premiere at a major fest there,” Melski, a Sydney native, said in a press release.
“It’s a great start for our movie and we’re proud to represent Nova Scotia.”
The film that was written, directed and co-produced by Melski is about an expectant couple who spend a terrifying weekend at a haunted country inn that was once a notorious maternity home.
“I’m a fan of vintage atmospheric horror like ‘The Shining and Rosemary’s Baby,’” said Melski. “This film emphasizes story and suspense over shock and gore.”
It stars French-Canadian actress Suzanne Clement, who was Cannes best actress winner for a film called ‘Mommy,’ and Canadian film and television star Allan Hawco.
The film was shot in Windsor and Elmsdale and produced under the province’s Film and Television Production Incentive Fund and assistance from Telefilm Canada.
The Child Remains has an anticipated Canadian theatrical release in the spring of 2018.
