With his driver’s licence and passport already revoked, a Sydney man is now serving 90 days in jail for failing to adhere to court orders, including paying more than $34,000 in child support.

Michael Hill was jailed Monday by Supreme Court Justice Lee Anne MacLeod-Archer who had previously set a deadline for Hill to pay at least half of the amount owing, along with presenting a plan to repay the remainder.

“A message must be sent to Mr. Hill and others who flaunt court orders. I am satisfied that Mr. Hill will not take any steps to address the order unless strongly compelled to do so,” MacLeod-Archer said in a previous decision in the case.

An Ontario court issued a child support order in 2011 against Hill, for one child, in the amount of $510 per month.

The order was transferred to Nova Scotia in 2014. As of the end of March, Hill was $34,221.54 in arrears.

As a result of his non-payment, Hill’s driver’s licence and passport were revoked because he failed to show any reason why he can’t pay.
