JOHNSON, Shirley Marie (Ettinger)

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear mother Shirley Marie (Ettinger) Johnson in the early morning hours on June 17, 2017. Shirley was born at home in Latties Brook, Georgefiel­d, NS, on November 7, 1925 to loving parents Mildred (McFetridge) and Nelson Ettinger. She was the eldest of six siblings. In her youth she attended High School in Dartmouth and later Business College in Truro.

Shirley was employed as a secretary to the County Clerk Treasurer for 26 years until her retirement. She was an avid gardener. She also enjoyed volunteer work and spent much time devoted to helping others. She participat­ed with Friends for Seniors, Daughters of the Nile, Mystic Club and UCW. She also was an active member of the United Protestant Church in Sydney River. She enjoyed music and singing all her life. She had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of several church choirs over her lifespan. Shirley also enjoyed hand stitch quilting and sewing as a pass time.

She was predecease­d by her husband, Earle CA Johnson; brothers, William Ettinger (Minna), Albert Ettinger (Elizabeth) and Victor Ettinger (Geraldine), and sister, Freda Welner.

Shirley is survived by her children, Shelley, Sydney Forks, NS, Jim (Hilda), Dieppe, NB; sister, Kay Douglas, Halifax, NS, and nieces and nephews within Nova Scotia and across Canada.

Shirley was truly a very kind and gentle soul. She was a sweet woman who loved life and the company of others. Always present with a ready smile and an endless patience she was a devoted wife, mother and friend.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral service will take place Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel with Rev. Dana Feltmate officiatin­g. Interment in Alfred Smith Cemetery.
