The inFlux Festival kicks off today with two participatory workshops.

The festival is a new summerlong celebration of the arts, cultures and communities of Inverness County.

Throughout the summer artists, craftspeople and writers will lead workshops at the Inverness County Centre for the Arts. Workshops will be open and accessible to artists and non-artists, adults and children.

Today, the event starts at 10 a.m. with The Print Your Own T-shirt workshop. The goal is to learn fundamentals of stencil making and screen-printing with Brooklyn Stewart, a NSCAD graduate.

In this three-hour workshop, Stewart will coach participants on transforming an image of their choice into a one-of-a-kind T-shirt design.

Participants are asked to bring an unribbed cotton article of clothing, tote bag or pillowcase on which to print. The workshop is $30 for Inverness County Centre for the Arts members and $35 for non-members.

At 2 p.m., the Knitting with Cecilia Jacobs of the Ginger Sheep workshop will end the day.

The two-hour workshop will explore the different fibres used for thrums, the different techniques used for thrumming and the assortment of projects you can make with thrumming.

Participants will knit a headband during the workshop. Beginner knitting experience is required.

Participants must bring medium weight yarn (wool or acrylic) and size 5.5mm/US9 needles.

Jacob’s workshop also costs $30 for Inverness County Centre for the Arts members and $35 for non-members.

A number of music events will also be held throughout the summer as part of the inFlux Festival.

From jazz to harp music, the art centre will host a range of both 19 and over evening events with full bar, and afternoon family-friendly events in their gardens.

Tuesday evenings throughout the summer will see inFlux Ideas talks from 6-7 p.m. at the art centre. Experts on a range of topics will hold the talks, from postimpressionism to the ear.

Other events through the summer include an exhibition opening and benefit auction Friday, 6-9 p.m. to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary and support the Inverness County Centre for the Arts.
