A basketball camp at Cape Breton University aims to help the development of players across the island.

The Cape Breton University summer basketball camps will take place next month at Sullivan Field House in Sydney. The goal of the camp is to help individual skill development, learn new skills, information and modern techniques as well as team concepts.

Fabian McKenzie, head coach of the CBU Capers women’s basketball team, will host the girls camp, July 10-14. The cost of the camp is $250 and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

“I love to see young players develop in the game of basketball as it can provide a lot of opportunities for them,” said McKenzie. “There are so many good young players in Cape Breton and a lot of good coaches helping them. We will provide elite training in their off-season to help them stay active.”

“This basketball camp will be an intense week for players,” he said. “I have been blessed with the opportunity to travel around the world with our national

team and will be bringing a lot of these concepts back to the camp.”

McKenzie said basketball has grown immensely in Cape Breton over the years.

“People can look no further

than our roster to see Cape Breton talent,” he said. “Alison Keough is arguably the best player in Canadian university basketball and she is from Marion Bridge. Hannah Brown from North Sydney has steadily

grown in our system, while Toni Bianchini of North Sydney and MacKenzee Ryan of Glace Bay are young players with potential.”

The most important part of the camp for McKenzie is for the participants to have fun.

“I want them to enjoy learning new skills and learning how to improve their game,” said McKenzie. “I also want them to see that the skills they learn at our camps can help open up a pathway to playing for the Capers in the future.”

Aside from the girls camp, there will also be a boys camp as well as a mini boys and girls camp. The boys camp, for players in Grade 6-12, will run from July 17-21. Meanwhile the mini camp will take place from July 24-28.
