You can count Sydney Forks golfer Aubrey Farrell among the contenders at the Nova Scotia junior boys championship that opens Monday at Ken-Wo Golf Club in New Minas.

The 18-year-old Seaview Golf and Country Club member finished tied for second place at last year’s tournament at Chester Golf Club. He went on to finish as the top Nova Scotian at the national junior boys championship in St. John’s, N.L. He won a Canadian Junior Golf Association event at Cabot Links in Inverness last season as well.

Farrell opened the 2017 season with a fourth-place finish at a CJGA event at the Links at Penn Hills in the boys U19 division. This week, he’s competing at the men’s amateur championship being contested at Oakfield Country Club.

“I haven’t been doing as well as I did last year so far, but I still expect myself to do really well at these tournaments coming up,” Farrell said in an interview prior to this week’s men’s amateur.

“I’d say my game is a lot better than last year, but I just haven’t been doing well in tournaments. My putting has gotten way better. I’m just waiting for it to click in tournaments.”

It’s a busy summer for Farrell. Following this week’s amateur and next week’s junior championship, he’ll be taking part in the annual Cape Breton Roadbuilders at Lingan Golf and Country Club, July 15-16. Then, he’ll tee off at the Future Links Atlantic Championship at Clare Golf and Country Club in Church Point, July 18-20.

He’s also looking for a return trip to junior nationals, which will be contested in Kingston, Ont., July 31 to Aug. 3. In the fall, Farrell will join the Northeastern State University River Hawks golf team in Oklahoma on a scholarship.

Farrell is among a contingent of Seaview golfers competing in next week’s junior boys division. He’s joined by Colin Fraser and Ian Fraser of North Sydney, and Blake Cox, A.J. Ley, Andrew McCarron and Rory Morrison of Sydney. Seamus Stears of Baddeck will represent Bell Bay Golf club at the tournament.

In the bantam boys draw, Baddeck’s Dell Welton of Bell Bay will compete, along with The Lakes Golf Club members Liam Brann, Jared Jamael, Benjamin MacGillivary, Calan MacLean and Ethan MacLean of Sydney, Thomas Jacobs of Sydney River, Owen Burke and Liam Robertson.

The bantam boys and girls tournament runs Monday and Tuesday, while the junior boys and girls event goes from Monday to Thursday. No Cape Breton girls are registered to compete.
