Recreation facility funds nine Cape Breton projects

Nine Cape Breton community projects will receive money from the provincial government, it was announced Friday.

Derek Mombourque­tte met with David Gabriel, president of the Baille Ard Trails Associatio­n at the Baille Ard Nature Trail, announcing the $17,000 grant for upgrades to the park.

“This project will certainly enhance the Baille Ard Trails experience,” Gabriel said in a press release.

He says the upgrades should begin as early as next week.

Mombourque­tte also met with eight other organizati­ons to announce other grants for community upgrades.

The Cantley Village Recreation Associatio­n will receive $60,000 for their accessible multi-use green space and playground, Glace Bay Community Commons Society will receive $100,000 for their outdoor recreation facility,

Munroe Park will receive $47,300 for soccer facility improvemen­ts and Creignish Youth, Adult and Seniors Wellness Club will receive $36,000 for the restoratio­n

of the ball field, tennis court and playground.

“The Creignish ball field and tennis court have been in the community for over 40 years,”

said Creignish restoratio­n project co-chairs Lillian Berry and Smokey MacNeil. “It exists for the residents and visitors of the communitie­s of Route 19 to use freely. We are extremely pleased to get this funding to secure these facilities for future generation­s.”

The New Waterford and District Community Centre is using their $32,000 for a new Zamboni, Cabot Snowmobile Club of Cape Breton is receiving $23,000 for a bridge repair, the Lighthouse of Cape Breton in Sydney will be upgrading the Undercurre­nt Youth Centre Space with $8,000 and the Dominion and District Recreation Complex Society will receive $25,000 for a new Zamboni and new exit doors.

“It is important that our communitie­s remain connected and vibrant and provide facilities that help people make physical and community activity a part of their daily lives.” Mombourque­tte said.

A total of $348,000 is being put into these nine Cape Breton projects.
