The signature Canada 150 project, the Dream Catchers will be in Sydney on Friday.

The free show will take place at noon inside the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.

The Dream Catchers is a music and dance-filled show that explores the dreams of young Canadians through a lens of reconciliation, inclusion and the environment.

It features diverse, young performers from across Canada who blend hip hop, spoken word and folk with contemporary and indigenous dance.

The concert is being presented by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality recreation department as part of the year-long celebration of Canada’s sesquintennial.

CBRM recreation program co-ordinator Joe Costello said Sydney is fortunate to be hosting the spectacle.

“We’re very lucky to be one of the limited number of communities across Canada to host the Dream Catchers and to include it in our year-long Canada 150 celebration,” said Costello.

The group has been touring nationally this summer, with two companies performing coast to coast in more than 30 communities. The tour has already stopped in Wolfville and Lunenburg in Nova Scotia and will be in Pictou following the Sydney performance.

The show will present the audience with original music, dance and story from such performers as City Natives, Kinnie Starr, Paper Lions, Khodi Dill, Nikki Payne, Carmen Braden, Tiny Emperor, Daniel Maté, Riley Simpson-Fowler and Twin Flames.

Mary Francis Moore wrote the show with direction by ahdri zhina mandiela, choreography by Barbara Kaneratonni Diabo and musical direction by Scott Christian.

The Sydney performance is open to people of all ages. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the performance will begin promptly at noon.
