Baddeck native Trevor Chow won his third Nova Scotia men’s mid-amateur golf title on Sunday, and in convincing fashion.

The 40-year-old member at Ashburn (Halifax) won by five strokes, finishing at 11 under par. He capped things off with a 4-under-par 68 on Sunday, after rounds of 69 on Friday and 68 on Saturday.

“My ball striking was really good the past couple of weeks and it was just my putting at the amateur that held me back a bit,” said Chow, who lives in Hammonds Plains. “So I switched back to my old putter that I used for the last eight years and everything felt good again. I started to make a lot of putts.

“I hit almost every green, every day. It was a weird feeling going around the golf course and be in control for all three days and play well all three days.”

Sunday’s round for the champion included birdies on No. 1, No. 3, No. 4, No. 9, No. 10 and No. 15. A bad break off the tee resulted in a double bogey on No. 18, but that was of little consequence in the end.

Chow also won the tournament in 2009 and 2013.

“They’re all different,” he said. “The first one is special for that reason, the second was special because it was at my home course at Ashburn, and this one is special because as you get older, you never know when your last one will happen.”

Chow entered the day four strokes up on Jody Swim of River Hills Golf Club. Swim placed second at 6 under, and shot a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. David Williamson of Ashburn placed a distant third at 6 over par.

The provincial team will consist of Chow, Paul Coulson of Truro and Aaron Nickerson of River Hills. The alternate is Matt Vaughan of Oakfield. Nationals will be held in Regina, Sask., Aug. 22-25.

“It’s always special be a champion or any member of the team,” said Chow. “Most of us want to be playing in the national events and I love the Canadian mid-am. I think we have a great team that’s going and it’ll be fun to represent Nova Scotia.”

As an added bonus, Chow has also earned an exemption into

the 2017 Cape Breton Open, a MacKenzie Tour/PGA Tour Canada event taking place at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, Aug. 28 to Sept. 3.

Seaview Golf and Country Club member Aaron Barrington of Coxheath, who lives in Fort McMurray, Alta., placed 11th at 13 over. Other Cape Breton golfers in the field included Matt Murchison of Lingan (tied 78th, +41), Leon Paul of Lingan (97th, +61), Alex Poirier of Le Portage (99th, +64) and Adrian Paul of Seaview (101st, +66).
