Standoff ends with Donkin man’s arrest.

A 29-year-old Donkin man was arrested on Tuesday after resisting arrest and barricading himself inside a Glace Bay residence that resulted in an hour-long standoff with regional police.

Cape Breton Regional Police spokesperson Desiree Vassallo said at about 12:30 p.m. two officers on foot patrol on Brookside Street recognized a man with an outstanding warrant.

But when the officers attempted to arrest the man, he ran into a residence on the same street and refused to come out, claiming he had a gun.

Vassallo said the Donkin man was familiar with the residence.

Members of the police department’s emergency response team responded to the scene. Officers successfully negotiated with the man to come out of the house and at about 1:30 p.m. he was taken into custody.

“The area was contained for the duration of the incident,” said Vassallo. “A search confirmed there was no weapon.”

“We have emergency response team members on each of our shifts, so they are ready and available any time these kind of calls arise rather than to have to wait to call out additional members with that specialty.”

Charges related to the incident are pending.

Vassallo said any time there is information about the possibly of an individual having a weapon, members of the emergency response team are called to the scene as a precautionary measure for public safety.

“We have emergency response team members on each of our shifts, so they are ready and available any time these kind of calls arise rather than to have to wait to call out additional members with that specialty,” she said.

“So they are always available at any time and can respond quickly to the scene any time there is threat of a weapon.”
