New date assigned for regional chief

SYDNEY — A new arraignmen­t date was set Tuesday for the regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Joseph Wayne Morley Googoo, 48, of South Park Street, Halifax, is charged with assault and causing a disturbanc­e by arguing and fighting in hallway.

The offences are alleged to have occurred at the Hampton Inn, located in Membertou, on June 17. Googoo, a former chief of the Waycobah First Nation, was to appear in provincial court July 31 but a new date of Aug. 8 was assigned Tuesday.

Googoo was not present for the court appearance as he is attending the assembly’s annual meeting in Regina.

Among the conditions of his release, Googoo is to stay away from the Hampton Inn and the Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.

He is to have no contact with the complainan­t and is to refrain from alcohol and drugs not prescribed him by a physician.
