SNOOK, Viola Eliza

-

It is with the deepest of sadness and unbearable sorrow that we the children of Viola Eliza Snook, 85, announce her sudden passing, July 24, 2017, at the CB Regional Hospital, surrounded by her children. Our Mom was born on September 14, 1931 in a small town in Newfoundland called Jersey Harbour. Mom worked hard all her life for her husband and eight children. When her children were young she worked for individual families as a house keeper but when her youngest child was old enough, she went to work as a personal care worker, until her hearing loss caused her to give up her dream job. Mom always wanted to be a nurse, but as Newfoundland was not yet a part of Canada, being the eldest, she was forced to quit school in grade 7 to help her immediate family of 12 brothers and sisters. Mom met and married Dad (Stephen) in Newfoundland but when Dad had to fish off Glace Bay, she decided to move herself to Glace Bay, to be with him and to start her family.

Mom truly loved her Bible and its author Jehovah God, and we are sure of her safe keeping in his hands. One of her favourite scriptures was Isaiah 25: 8 “He will swallow up death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces” and John 5: 28,29, in part it talks about the resurrection hope. She kept these scriptural hopes close to her heart and many more like it and tried to instill these principals in her children.

Mom was the daughter of the late Frank and Lillian Stoodley. Mom is survived by her sons, Jim (Beverley) and Sheldon (Helen MacDonald); daughters, Dorothy Doucette, Brenda (Mark Appleton), Cheryl, Rhonda MacMullin (Steve). Mom is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Rose (Jack deceased) Sydney, Alice Gillis, Glace Bay, Mabel Hill (Ed), Maxine Courty (Rome), Linda Bogers (Pierre deceased) and Marge (Joe), she thought of Marge as a daughter more than a sister, all in Ontario; brothers, Eric and Albert (Yvonne, whom she loved like a sister), Glace Bay, Jim (Doreen), Marion Bridge, Winston (Raylene), Newfoundland, Gordon, Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, and sister-in-law, Susie Devoe, Sydney. Mom was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren, who will miss her dearly. Mom had a wonderful extended family in Newfoundland the Lilly family that we would like to acknowledge.

Mom dearly loved her dog Precious, who would let her know someone was at “the door”.

Besides her parents she is predeceased by her husband, Stephen Eric; sons, Stevie and Kevin; son-in-law, George, and brother, John; mother and father-in-law, Morgan and Julia Snook; brothers-in-law, Jack Rose, Henry and Tom Snook; Pierre Bogers, John Devoe; sisters-in-laws, Mary and Isabel Snook.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2017 where family will visit with family and friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral at 2 p.m., her brother, Albert officiating, in Patten Funeral Home and Chapel 71 Union St., Glace Bay.

The family would like to acknowledge Jack Campbell and Melissa Daley for their love, care and concern throughout the years.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the SPCA, or a charity of ones choice.
