Bernard Francis Saunders age 65 passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 25, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Bernard (Known as Blackie by his family and friends) was born in Sydney Mines, on October 17, 1951 he was the son of the late John and Helen (Devoe) Saunders.

Bernard spent part of his life as a fisherman. He loved music and guitars, and could always be found socializin­g with someone. He had a passion for woodwork and fixing whatever he could get his hands on. This talent made him as asset to family and friends.

Bernard is survived by his two loving sons, Bernie ( Kim) , AB and Robert, AB.; sister s and brothers, Kenneth, Ernie ( Lillian), Buckie, Marie ( Robert) Potter, Rose ( Bill) MacRae, all of Sydney Mines, Judy Young, Florence, Matilda ( Michael) O’Toole, Alder Point, Bernadette (Rob), Ont. Along with his loving grandchild­ren, Wolfred and Tristan Saunders, Shalom McNaughton, and Tristan McGrady , all of Alberta, Chelsea McKee, Sydney Mines; along with many loving nieces and nephews. Bernard will also be dearly missed by Shelley Devoe, Paulette MacLean and Laura Matheson.

Besides his parents Bernard was predecease­d by his baby brother, William James; brother, John Kevin and grandparen­ts, Ernest and Matilda Devoe and John and Margaret Saunders and by brother-inlaw, Charlie Young.

Bernard’s sons would like to give a special thanks and appreciati­on to the Staff on the ICU unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, for the exceptiona­l care Bernard received. And also extend a very loving thanks to all of the family who stayed by his side in the hospital during this week.

Visitation for the late Bernard Saunders will be held on Saturday July 29, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. in the JM Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. In keeping with Bernard’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.
