We, the family of Robert McCharles, are saddened to announce his passing on July 26, 2017 in coxheath after a battle with cancer.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Jeanie; son, David (Kristi), and daughters, Jan (Mike) and Beth (Ryan). His life was filled with the love of his seven grandchild­ren. Also left to grieve are, his sister, Jeanie (Whylie Mulvihill), and his brother, Grant (Kate).

He was predecease­d by his father, Grant; mother, Peggy, and sister, Wendy. Robert will be greatly missed by Jeanie’s family, Sandra and Cyril MacDonald, Robert and Ginny Sampson and Michael and Kim Sampson. His best friend, Jamie MacDonald, will miss his ‘dieu’ buddy and lifelong friend.

Robert spent over 30 years working in the environmen­tal industry and retired as a Managing Partner with Dillion Consulting in Sydney. He spent many years supporting the cultural and economic growth of our community and served on the Cape Breton Board of Trade, Cape Breton Partnershi­p and Mentor Connect. Robert was a board member with the Cape Breton Music Cooperativ­e and a founding member of the Coxheath Hills Wilderness Associatio­n.

Robert was a long standing board member with Innovacorr­p, a crown corporatio­n that found and funded tech startups in Nova Scotia. He also sat on the board of the Canadian Council for Human Resources in the Environmen­tal Industry (CCHREI) for over 10 years. Robert has been recognized locally and nationally for his contributi­on to his community as well as the environmen­t.

Robert was known in his early years to be a tough guy on the ice, but later, his passion for the environmen­t inspired him to write poetry, music and to become exceptiona­l water colour artist.

Our family would like to thank, Dr. Paul Murphy, Dr. Ron MacCormick, Dr. Saliba, Dr. Shareef, Dr. Ritter and Susan MacKenzie for the exceptiona­l care they provided.

Robert’s greatest love was Cape Breton Island and the people that live here, to all the friends, family and neighbours who helped us during these past months, we thank you.

Our family has used and understand­s the need for Palliative and Hospice Care in our community. A fund has been started by the Cape Breton Regional Hospital to raise one million dollars toward the creation of a new Hospice Centre. It is
