Nova Scotia’s men’s softball team remains unbeaten
Beatrice Currie of Sydney River leads soccer women to big win at Canada Games.
Beatrice Currie of Sydney River fired a hat trick to pace Nova Scotia’s women’s soccer team to a convincing 8-0 victory over New Brunswick to open play at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg, Man., on Saturday.
Currie struck in the third, 42nd and 69th minutes. Sydney Kennedy netted a pair, while Taylor Green, Erin Freeman and Teni Akindoju added singles. The Nova Scotia squad also includes Sydney natives Becca LeBlanc and Olivia MacIntyre.
Nova Scotia concludes group play today against Manitoba at 9:30 p.m. Atlantic time.
The men’s softball team improved to 3-0 after a 3-1 victory over Alberta on Sunday.
Second baseman Levi Denny of Eskasoni hit a single in the victory, while first baseman Randall Bernard of Waycobah was held hitless. Noah Hawes led Nova Scotia with a triple and two doubles, while Dylan McCoul pitched the win.
Nova Scotia also posted wins of 7-2 over Manitoba and 6-2 over Prince Edward Island on Saturday. In late action, Nova Scotia faced Newfoundland and Labrador on Sunday night. Today, they’ll play Saskatchewan at 2 p.m. Atlantic.
The women’s basketball team, which features Nalini Maharaj of East Bay, won their opening game by a lopsided 98-14 score against Yukon on Saturday. The team was set to play Alberta late Sunday night for first place in the ‘B’ pool, which determines when they’ll play next.
On the water, Nova Scotia flag-bearer Siobhan MacDonald of Mabou placed fourth in the opening day of competition in the 2.4mR para-sailing competition at Gimli Yacht Club. Racing continues today and runs until Thursday.
