SPRINGALL, Gerald ‘Taits’

It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Gerald ‘Taits’ Springall on July 29, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Waterford, he was the son of the late John and Bridget (Walsh) Springall.

Tait’s first job was working in No. 16 mine for a number of years before moving to Ontario where he, his wife and their daughter Monica lived for 11 years. After returning home in 1974, he became a member of the New Waterford Police Department where he worked until his retirement in the late 80’s. He loved all sports and after moving home from Ontario to New Waterford, he became the coach of the Hi-Fi Hawks Fastball D Baseball team, coaching them to two consecutiv­e championsh­ip wins 1976-1977. He made many long-term relationsh­ips with his ball players as they were his good friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ann; daughters, Monica (Robbie) and Geraldine (Russell); sisters, Edna (Angie), Eva (Stan) and Shelia; brother, Victor (Theresa); two grandchild­ren, Joshua and Matthew; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 3, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. Burial will take on Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Cemetery with Deacon Leo Penny officiatin­g. Funeral arrangemen­ts are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
