YOGA IN THE PARK

Sunday event mixes workshops with shopping.

Breathing Space Yoga Studio is hosting a Summer Yoga Event on Sunday at Open Hearth Park that combines workshops, speakers and a vendors market.

“What’s really exciting is Lululemon is coming and they have never been to Cape Breton before,” enthused Krystall MacLeod, owner of Breathing Space in Sydney.

“It’s great they are coming because it is just before school. I have made a post on Facebook and people are saying what they want and the people from Lululemon have been taking notes.”

Lululemon will be there along with many other local vendors like chiropractors and jewelry makers. The market is open to the public but for ticket holders there’s more.

Tickets cost $20 for early bird and $25 regular and include speakers, a group yoga class, two workshops of participants’ choice and lunch provided by Downtown Nutrition. If it rains, the event will happen in the Mayflower Mall, near Best Buy.

“If people don’t want to do the event they can still come down and check out the vendors,” explained MacLeod, a mother of two who moved to Cape Breton when she was 13 from Burnaby, B.C.

“People also don’t have to take all the workshops. If someone wants to buy their ticket, come down for lunch and only take the meditation workshop, that’s fine. You don’t have to stay there the whole time.”

Normally the price for just one of the workshops would be between $30 and $40.

The workshops being offered are yoga for pain management, meditation, reiki, barre, yin and Thai massage, inversions and arm balances and the Ascendo Fitness Infinite Challenge.

“I tried to get a workshop for everybody,” MacLeod said.

“We also tried to incorporate some of the other things we do at the studio, like barre classes. Lucy Wintermans teaches that. And the Infinite Challenge – the ladies from Ascendo Fitness will do this workshop.”

The Summer Yoga Event starts at 10 a.m. and goes until 3 p.m.

“I’m just trying to help people get back into the swing of things. Sometimes in the summer, you kind of just neglect that health lifestyle, you know? Now it’s coming on the end of the summer and people are getting back into the swing of things,” MacLeod explained.

“And I’m trying to help grow the community. Health and wellness is really starting to take off in Sydney and in Cape Breton.”
