THE PIER DEAR
Erickson to be remembered at this year’s Labour Day ceremonies
Remembering Carmie Erickson and the role of Labour Day.
September 4, 2017 is Labour Day.
What is Labour Day and why do we celebrate it?
Labour Day is celebrated each year on the first Monday in September. Labour Day was created by the labour movement. Unlike other holidays where some people are off and some work, Labour Day is very straight-forward. All government buildings, retail stores, banks, libraries and so forth are closed. Some restaurants and convenience stores do remain open.
Labour Day celebrates the economic achievements of workers and the contributions that workers have made to strengthen the welfare of our country.
Cape Breton Labour Council plays a big role in promoting worker’s rights. The labour council is the formation of many unions coming together collectively to provide a strong voice for workers and their families. At a labour council meeting, each union has the chance to be part of a discussion regarding Nova Scotia labour practices and developments. The labour council believes that unity is strength.
This month, the Cape Breton
Labour Council was shaken with the news concerning the sudden passing of their president, Carmie Erickson. Erickson was a very caring individual, both in her personal life and as president of Cape Breton Labour Council, she was always available to assist someone in need and could always be seen at solidarity events.
Carmie will be greatly missed by her family, friends and also her extended family consisting of her union brothers and sisters.
During this year’s Labour Day picnic, Carmie will be remembered for her determination and her impact on the labour movement. Please join in the celebrations on Monday, September 4, 2017, at the Open Hearth Park from 12–2 p.m.
