Trails series to kick off

-

A new trails series to be offered over all four seasons was announced by the CBRM recreation department on Wednesday.

The series begins with an end of summer session, taking place Sept. 23-30, featuring guided lunch hour hikes and trail activities.

The end of summer session will also introduce the 52 Hike Challenge, which is a global movement empowering people to take a personal journey to discover the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits gained through hiking once a week for an entire year.

Charlotte MacDonald, program co-ordinator with the CBRM recreation department, said the department wants the end of summer session to show newcomers all of the trails the CBRM has to offer and help seasoned hikers get out more often.

“We wanted to do something that enhances people’s awareness of the trails because we have so many great trails in the CBRM and we want people to be aware of them,” said MacDonald. “Sometimes we need a little motivation too, even those that do know the trails may need motivation to come back out and visit the trails.”

Along with the 52 Hike Challenge, September also has other hiking events that co-ordinate with the end of summer session of hiking. Coxheath Trails will be hosting their trail run during the end of summer session. MacDonald said the program also aims to get hikers out during the entire year, not just summer months.

The second installment, the fall session, will take place Oct. 21-28 and will include a Halloween Hike at Night event. In the winter session, you can expect a Walk All Over Winter guided snowshoeing adventure and, finally, the spring session will include a multi-trail Capture the Flag challenge. More information will be released about each session as each season approaches. For more information on trails and recreation activities, visit CBRM Official Site on Facebook or call 902 563 5510.
