Selfies with parents, hugs between friends and a mix of nervousness and excitement were common as the first day of school got underway for students in the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board.

Cole, Cooper and Landon were the main reasons why Grade 1 student Patrick Miles-Young was looking forward to beginning the new school year.

“I got to see Cole over the summer,” he said before going off to meet his them.

The potential to make some new friends was another reason for his enthusiasm.

“I asked him if he’s nervous and he said only because he has a loose tooth,” said Carol Miles, his mother.

For Grade 5 student Ella Oakley, Thursday’s nervousness over the new school year quickly turned to happiness when she was ambushed with a big hug from a friend she hadn’t seen in a while.

“It feels good to be back, kind of,” she said before the hug at Harbourside Elementary.

“I like this school but I’m looking forward to going to middle school.”

Noah Brookman said he was frankly not looking forward to Grade 10 at Sydney Academy as he walked his sister to her first day of Grade 5.

His sister Chelsea wasn’t looking forward to a new school year, either, most likely because she had such a great summer.

“I went to the beach a bunch of times and camping and water balloon fights,” she said.

Excited described Joshua Hay’s feelings as he was heading off to Grade Primary at Harbourside Elementary.

His mom Rosanna was also excited and also a bit nervous.

Still, she expressed a great deal of confidence in the staff at her son’s new school.

“The school has been very helpful. They started in May helping me to transition him,” she said.

“He is definitely looking forward to it. The only thing he doesn’t like is that he can’t take his toys but I told him there’s lots of toys in his classroom.”

Starting a new school year was also a bit tough on some other parents.

Just ask Melissa Oakley, who very much enjoyed an active summer with her young family.

“They are pretty excited. Katie is excited to go up in a grade, Ella is a little iffy because of middle school next year. It’s creeping up,” she said.

“I work so much so it’s a bit of a break for me but I will definitely miss them. I’ll miss our daytime excursions but, what can you do, they have to learn.”

While Thursday was the first day of school for CBVRSB students, classes started on Wednesday for those under the guidance of the Strait Regional School Board and Conseil Scolaire Acadien Provincial.
