A free outdoor concert series hosted by the Cape Breton Regional Municipality recreation department will make its only stop in North Sydney today.

The municipality’s Stages and Spaces concert series will be held at Smelt Brook Park from 6-8 p.m., featuring music by The Road Kings.

Recreation program co-ordinator Joe Costello believes the concert series is the perfect way to extend the summer.

“We generally have a really nice end of August and in through September, the weather is great and all our community festivals are generally finished by that point,” he said. “By hitting parks and putting on some music, it gives both our residents and visitors a chance to come out and experience that real (community) atmosphere … for the last few weeks before autumn.”

Concerts have already taken place in Louisbourg and Dominion, but the Grand Narrows concert was cancelled due to rain.

“There has been some good feedback from people in attendance, most saying they enjoyed having music in the park at this time of the year, kind of extending the season for everybody,” said Costello.

Costello said residents should enjoy the performance by The Road Kings.

“They play a little bit of everything — they’re a band that has been playing for a number of years now,” he said.

Aside from today’s performance, the series will continue with concerts in Glace Bay (Sept. 15), New Waterford (Sept. 22) and Sydney (Sept. 29).

There are no rain dates for any of the concerts.
