New members wanted
Glace Bay Seniors and Pensioners Club hosting open house
The Glace Bay Seniors and Pensioners Club is looking for seniors who just want to get out and have fun.
The public is invited to check out the organization at an open house to be held at the club on Upper North Street, Glace Bay on Tuesday from 2-4 p.m.
The open house will include music by the Four Corners and a light lunch.
“Everyone is welcome,” said club president Robert Bradbury. “I encourage everyone to come and see our hall and to enjoy it.”
Bradbury said the organization is attempting to increase its membership.
“We want people to come out … to get out of the house and enjoy activities.”
Bradbury said people are always amazed by the club’s hall.
“Everyone coming in says how nice our hall is,” he said. “There was a guy from Halifax who said it was the nicest hall he has ever seen, even nicer than the ones in Halifax.”
Bradbury, who took over as president of the club this year, is focusing on building up the membership. Although all seniors and pensioners are welcome to join, he hopes the club will attract people aged 55-65.
The club currently has 45 members.
“A lot of our members are older now,” he said. “We want to get more younger people involved and get more things going at the club.”
Bradbury hopes to increase club activities to include outings like a bus trip to Louisbourg or Baddeck.
“We want to try and bring some things in people can enjoy in their later years.”
The club currently holds dart nights Fridays from 7-10 p.m. and a dart league operates Mondays from 1-4 p.m. On Wednesdays and Sundays there are card games from 8-10 p.m.
The club also holds two dances a month.
The club is open at about 9 a.m. daily and people can drop by anytime. There’s a pool table and dartboards which can be used.
‘There is even a card table downstairs if five or six people wanted to get together and play cards.
“We’d like to hear from anyone with ideas, even people outside the club. We would certainly look at them seriously.”
