Bail hearing for assault accused set

SYDNEY — An Eskasoni man is to return to provincial court today for a bail hearing in connection with an assault with a knife on two people. Terrance Levi Poulette, 35, is charged with eight offences that include two counts of assault with a weapon (a knife), two counts of uttering threats, and single counts of aggravated assault, forcible confinemen­t, assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was charged after an incident Friday night at a Rotary Drive apartment in Sydney that sent two people to hospital with non-life threatenin­g injuries.

Cape Breton Regional Police were called to the apartment shortly after 11 p.m. and found a 37-year-old male with multiple facial laceration­s. He was treated in hospital and released. A 34-year-old female was also injured and treated and released from hospital. Police said all three involved in the incident are known to each other.

Poulette made a brief court appearance Monday and was remanded pending the outcome of a bail hearing set for today.

Accused to have bail hearing

SYDNEY — A 27-year-old Sydney man is expected to have a bail hearing today on charges that include arson and break and enter. Russell Charles Ellery, of no fixed address, is charged in connection with a break and enter Sunday at a Sydney apartment on Gritton Avenue. According to Cape Breton Regional Police, officers responded to a call on Gritton Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. having received informatio­n a male had broken windows and entered a basement apartment.

Police first had to extinguish a small fire in the apartment and after speaking with witnesses at the scene, located the suspect walking on Argyle Street.

Ellery is now charged with break and enter, arson, mischief and three counts of breaching court orders. He is also facing two other unrelated counts of breaching court orders. After a brief court appearance Monday, Ellery was remanded pending the outcome of a bail hearing scheduled for today.
