NEW SEASON
High school soccer underway for another year.
The Riverview girls division 1 soccer team kicked off its season with a big win at home over Sydney Academy on Tuesday.
Riverview, who are the league’s defending champions, outran and outshot Sydney Academy to come on top with a decisive 10–0 win. From the beginning, the Riverview girls were controlling the ball at SA’s end and were already up 4–0 by the end of the first half.
The Riverview attack was led Taylor Coleman and Julia Currie, each scoring three goals apiece.
Coleman, who is a returning player, said she felt good about her first game back on the field.
“I was a little rusty, but I’ll get there. I thought it was decent today but there’s room for improvement during the season, definitely,” she said.
Maureen Ferguson, one of Riverview’s coaches, said she was happy with her team’s performance in their home opener but also agreed there was room to improve.
“I think they did a lot of things well. We were trying to, at least, keep the ball on the ground and we did a good job of that. We saw lots of things
that we can work on early in the season, so it’s a good starting point.”
Other scorers for Riverview were Maddie Coleman, Kelly MacInnis, Emma Orrego and Sasha MacDonald.
The other match of the day saw Breton Education Centre of New Waterford visiting Memorial High School of Sydney Mines, coming away with a 3-0 win. Scorers were unavailable.
Regular season play will
continue today with Riverview playing Memorial High School, Glace Bay High taking on Eskasoni and BEC playing Sydney Academy.
