Officials with a Sydney call centre attracted attention at a job fair in Glace Bay on Tuesday.

HR recruiter Sandra Murphy said by noon Tuesday, nine people had applied for jobs and five had been hired on the spot.

Murphy has been employed at ServiCom for 18 years.

“It’s the people there I like,” she said. “You’re treated really well — not like a number but like family. I couldn’t see me not working there.”

ServiCom organized the job fair in an attempt to hire another 50-100 customer service/ acquisition workers by the end of the year.

The call centre’s director Todd Riley said Cape Bretoners have those special qualities needed in the industry which is why ServiCom is successful and has 650675 employees at the Sydney location.

“We just went into a major campaign with the Red Cross for hurricane Harvey and now are taking calls for hurricane Irma,” he said.

Glace Bay resident Sherry Lambert was one of the people who applied for a job.

“I’ve been looking for a job for awhile now, for about eight months to a year.”

Lambert said she has call centre experience and likes that environment so is hoping to land employment.

Riley said ServiCom has made a major investment in employees offering hourly rates of $12$17 with bonuses.

“We have a very strong bonus plan and a very strong incentive plan.”

He said the Sydney call centre deals with such customers as Sirius XM, Comcast Cable, OnStar, Allstate Insurance and AT&T/Direct TV.

Riley said the company offers employees on site massage therapy.

“We all know that any job you work at today is very stressful so whatever we can do from a health and wellness standpoint we will invest into.”

HR recruiter Dani Mombourquette has been with ServiCom since July.

Mombourquette said the company has excellent benefits and compensation plans and there are opportunities for career advancement as well.

“It’s a really energetic environment. We have a lot of people who have been there a long time and that speaks to the type of environment that we have.”

Anyone wishing to apply for a position can go into ServiCom, 90 Inglis St., Sydney, or email sydneycareers@servicom-llc.com.
