Alzheimer’s coffee break organized

-

The public is invited to take a coffee break and visit the Alzheimer’s booth at the Mayflower Mall on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The annual Alzheimer coffee break begins at 10 a.m. and will continue all day.

The event is a national fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

“It’s a fundraiser held to raise money to assist families that are affected by Alzheimer’s disease,” said Gordon Martell, a volunteer with the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

However Martell said it’s also an opportunity to find out more about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Martell said the most common question he gets at these events is on prevention.

“We do have a brochure ‘Heads Up For Healthier Brains,’ with related information.”

MacNeil spent years volunteering and entertaining residents in nursing homes and became close to many people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia. He has been volunteering at the coffee break for 16 years.

Monetary donations will be accepted during the coffee break.

“If anyone wants to donate (refreshments for the coffee break) that would be great as we have lots of kids that stop by.”

Anyone wishing to help can contact Martell at 902-842-1136.
