ANTIGONISH — A celebratio­n of the life of Allan J. MacEachen will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Charles V. Keating Centre, 1100 Convocatio­n Blvd, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish. MacEachen, 96, a native of Inverness, died Tuesday at a hospital in Antigonish. The longtime Nova Scotia MP, cabinet minister and senator was also Canada’s first deputy prime minister. He was named a cabinet minister 11 times under three prime ministers.

He was a driving force behind many Canadian social programs including being instrument­al in having the Medical Care Act passed through parliament in 1966. He was invested as an Officer of The Order of Canada in 2008. Those attending the service, which is open to the public, are asked to be in their seats by 1:30 p.m. There will be a live webcast of the service at novascotia.ca.
