ANTIGO­NISH — A cel­e­bra­tion of the life of Al­lan J. MacEachen will be held Sun­day at 2 p.m. at the Charles V. Keat­ing Cen­tre, 1100 Con­vo­ca­tion Blvd, St. Fran­cis Xavier Uni­ver­sity, Antigo­nish. MacEachen, 96, a na­tive of In­ver­ness, died Tues­day at a hos­pi­tal in Antigo­nish. The long­time Nova Sco­tia MP, cab­i­net min­is­ter and se­na­tor was also Canada’s first deputy prime min­is­ter. He was named a cab­i­net min­is­ter 11 times un­der three prime min­is­ters.

He was a driv­ing force be­hind many Cana­dian so­cial pro­grams in­clud­ing be­ing in­stru­men­tal in hav­ing the Med­i­cal Care Act passed through par­lia­ment in 1966. He was in­vested as an Of­fi­cer of The Or­der of Canada in 2008. Those at­tend­ing the ser­vice, which is open to the public, are asked to be in their seats by 1:30 p.m. There will be a live we­b­cast of the ser­vice at no­vas­co­tia.ca.
