Capers women continue to roll

CBU men split weekend games in New Brunswick

- sports@cbpost.com

The season is young, but the Cape Breton Capers women’s soccer team is already putting up some impressive numbers.

The Capers, who went into the weekend ranked eighth in the national rankings, crushed the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus 5-0 on Sunday to improve their Atlantic University Sport record to 3-0-0. The CBU women have scored 14 goals so far and have not allowed a single tally against.

On Sunday, the Capers continued to demonstrate a balanced offense as five different players got on the score sheet.

Chantal Caron, who would also add two assists, gave CBU the lead in the 12th minute and the Capers never looked back. Tamara Brown scored an insurance marker in the 18th minute, while rookie Amelia Carlini, Ciera Disipio and Kennedy Curry padded the lead in the second half.

Goalie Rachel Yerxa made six saves to record the clean sheet, while Moncton’s Dominique Leblanc stopped eight of the 13 shots she faced.

On Saturday, the Capers defeated the New Brunswick Varsity Reds 3-0 on the strength of goals from Keona Simmonds, Disipio and

Rachel Lech. Lysianne Trottier picked up the shutout.

Meanwhile, goals were

much more difficult to come by in men’s play as CBU edged U de M 1-0 on Sunday after

playing their UNB counterparts to a 1-1 stalemate on Saturday.

On Sunday, a Marcus Campanile goal late in the first half was the only scoring the Capers needed in their 1-0 win over the Aigles Bleus.

Ben Jackson earned the shutout with two saves, while the host’s keeper, Andre Leblanc, turned aside 14 of the 15 shots directed at the Moncton net.

A day earlier, rookie striker Charlie Waters scored the only CBU goal in the Capers 1-1 draw with the Varsity Reds. Robert Park tallied for UNB.

Jackson stopped four of the five shots he faced in the CBU net, while Evan Barker saved six of seven at the UNB end.

The two Capers teams will each play a pair of home games this coming weekend. Acadia will visit CBU on Friday, while the Memorial SeaHawks

fly into town for a Saturday match.
