It is with broken hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Thomas Bernard Gale, aged 69, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on September 15, 2017. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Born in Whitney Pier, April 4, 1948, Bernie was the son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (Smith) Gale.

Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, June (Behune); daughter, Kimberly, Riverview, NB; grandchildren, Madelyn, Riverview, NB, Matthew Gale (Ashley), Saint John, NB; great grandchildren, Annabelle and Willow, Saint John, NB. He is also survived by his sister, Theresa (late Cliff) Crowder, Petawawa, ON; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his Cribbage Buddy Julie Hawco.

Aside from his parents, Bernie was predeceased by his son, Stephen Gale; sisters, Mary and Anna, and brothers, John, Edward and George.

Bernie started his working career with the Canadian Coast Guard, later going to T.W. Currys in Sydney where he met his longtime and loyal friend John Lewis. Bernie moved on to Acadian Lines for several years. He completed his career working for First Canada Bus Company in Alberta when his ill health required him to retire in 2012.

In keeping with Bernie’s wishes, cremation has been taken place and there will be no funeral service. He will be laid to rest beside his son Stephen in Resurrection Cemetery in Sydney Forks on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 1 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join the family at Our Lady of Fatima Church hall in Sydney River from 5-7 p.m. to celebrate Bernie’s life.

At this time, we would like to thank all of the Doctors, Nurses and Respiratory Therapists at both the ER Glace Bay and the ICU at the CBRH. The care Bernie received was second to none. The compassion shown to us will never be forgotten.
