‘Meet your friends’

Glace Bay Seniors and Pensioners Club attracting new members

- BY SHARON MONTGOMERY-DUPE

There are more friendships being made at the Glace Bay Seniors and Pensioners Club.

Vice-president Bernie Petrie said after a recent open house at their hall on Upper North Street in hopes of attracting new members, 10 joined on the spot and another 10 are in the process of joining.

“As well, some that joined automatically joined the Monday afternoon senior fun darts and a few more joined the Friday night dart league,” he said.

Petrie said they are pleased and hope more new members continue to come forward.

The club raises money by selling 50-50 tickets. Darts are held twice a week and dances twice a month including the second Saturday of each month and the last Saturday of each month.

The next dance is being held Sept. 30 from 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Petrie hopes more new people will come out for the dance and check out the club.

“Come and meet your friends from the past,” he said.

“Some people come out for the dances and find they know almost everyone in the hall.”

Petrie said as well the club is currently looking into organizing more events including a bus tour to Baddeck or Louisbourg, and a casino afternoon at the hall.

“We’ve already been talking to someone who told us if we want to try a casino afternoon he has all the wheels you spin and all that stuff and said he’d lend it to us.”

Along with activities, the club is open at about 9 a.m. daily and people can drop by anytime. There’s a pool table and dartboards, which can be used.

Petrie said it would be nice to get more people involved.

“We’re hoping the club will be here for generations to come.”
