MacPherson leads undefeated Bears

Riverview, Memorial JV teams pick up wins at home

Caleigh MacPherson scored two goals one minute apart to lead the Breton Education Centre Bears girls to a 5-0 win over the Sydney Academy Wildcats in Cape Breton High School Soccer League action at Open Hearth Park.

MacPherson struck in the fifth and sixth minutes for BEC (3-0-0). Amy MacNeil (40th), Emma Gale (52nd) and an own goal by Sydney Academy (0-3-0) in the 63rd rounded out the offence.

Kelsie Neville posted the shutout in goal.

In Coxheath, the Riverview Reds improved to 2-0-0 with a 6-0 win over the Memorial Marauders at Riverview field.

Emma Ferguson struck with a pair of goals, scoring in the sixth and 25th minutes. Kelly MacInnis (21st), Maddie Coleman (27th), Jocelyn Clarke (32nd) and Taylor Coleman (81st) added singles.

Virginia Braggio kept a clean sheet in goal. Memorial’s record dropped to 0-3-0.

The Memorial junior varsity girls eked out a win at their home field in Sydney Mines, edging Eskasoni, 3-2.

Kameron Power, Claire Maxwell and Eve Bunbury found the back of the net for the Marauders. Erin Denny and a Memorial own goal supplied the offence for Eskasoni.

Today, four games are on the schedule. In a doublehead­er at Veterans Memorial Field in New Waterford, BEC will host Memorial with the girls at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 8 p.m.

In a pair of boys games, Eskasoni will play Glace Bay at Open Hearth grass field, while Riverview plays Sydney Academy at the Open Hearth turf field. Both matches begin at 4:15 p.m.
