Organizers consider Terry Fox Runs successful
Organizers of the Baddeck and North Sydney Terry Fox Runs say this year’s events were a success.
The annual Terry Fox Run was held at the Bras d’Or Yacht Club in Baddeck as well as at the Northern Yacht Club in North Sydney on Sept. 17.
In Baddeck, 40 runners participated in the run, raising $2,300 for the Terry Fox Foundation with money going towards cancer research and awareness.
Organizer Ford Green was pleased with the turnout.
“For a little community of 800 to 1,000 people, Terry’s idea was to raise $1 per person, so I think we’re doing all right,” said Green.
Meanwhile in North Sydney, 101 runners raised $2,472 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Along with the run, money was also raised through the annual ceilidh and square dance, raising a combined total of $3,400.
Kay Batherson, organizer of the North Sydney events, said numbers for this year’s run were down.
“There were other runs taking place the same day, somebody mentioned there was around three runs taking place in Sydney at the same time,” said Batherson.
“Some suggested we have the run in the afternoon, but I find it a little hard doing that.”
Over the past seven years, the North
Sydney event has raised $34,562.14 for the Terry Fox Foundation. Last year, the run raised more than $4,200.
Batherson hopes to raise more money next September.
“Along with the run, we may have a yoga session as well next year,” said Batherson. “We did that one other year and we raised $400.”
