Sooners eyeing championship

Sydney defeats Dartmouth to take 3-2 lead in NSSBL finals

- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF

The Sydney Sooners shrugged off consecutive losses to the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry to reclaim the momentum in the Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League championship series.

The Sooners went into the weekend leading the best-ofseven series 2-0, but after a 6-2 loss on Friday evening and an 11-1 thrashing on Saturday afternoon the series was tied.

Enter Justin Brewer. The Sooners slugger also pitches, but this season saw only limited action on the mound. Yet that didn’t stop Brewer going the distance in Sydney’s 7-2 win at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.

Jordon Shepherd led the Sooners offence with a two-run home run, the game’s only dinger. Ironically, it was the long-ball that paced the Dry in the previous two games in which they pounded no fewer than six, including one in each of the two games by River Ryan’s Chris Head and a total of three by Anthony McKinley.

One way or another the series will wrap up next weekend and either the Sooners or the Dry will be celebrating their third league championship over the past five seasons. Sydney claimed the NSSBL crown in 2013 and 2014, while Dartmouth claimed the title the past two seasons.

Game 6 is scheduled for Friday at the Susan McEachern Ball Field in Sydney. The first pitch is set for 7 p.m. Game 7, if necessary, will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. at the same venue.
