The Cape Breton Jets are ready to start the inaugural season of the Nova Scotia Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League.

The Jets’ first game of the series is set for today against the Admirals of Upper Tantallon at the New Waterford and District Community Centre.

Head coach Fred Head says his team is excited to begin the season after having a successful start in their pre-season.

“They can’t wait to get going after playing, practicing and getting the early bird (tournament) in and we’ve played six games and won four of the six so we’re quite happy with the progress of the team,” said Head.

“We’re going to be young, we’re going to be fast and we’re hoping to be right up there with the rest of the league.”

During their early bird tournament, Jets at Sackville Arena finished with 2-2 record after the Jets were defeated in the tournament cross-over game, losing 3-0 to the home team Basin Armada at the Sackville Arena in Sackville.

Head said that this season is looking promising and the team is currently focusing on coming together as a team to develop a cohesive style.

“We’ve been working on our own, definitely this week in practice and working on break outs to get some form of system down pat,” said Head.

“It’s a little early and it’s going to take some time but we see a lot of good things with this team.”

Head added that the Nova Scotia Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League, which is in its very first season is poised to be highly competitive based on seeing teams in the early bird tournament that happened in September.

“We should be right up there, but by the looks of the early bird tournament, any team can win this league.”

Cape Breton and the Admirals will play today at 7:30 p.m., followed by an afternoon game on Sunday 1 p.m.
