HORNE, Murray Dodd
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Murray Dodd Horne, on September 26, 2017 on the Island of Barra, Scotland.
Murray was born in North Sydney on November 2, 1948 to the late William “Bill” and Zena Horne. He grew up in Moose Factory, Ontario and moved to Churchill, Manitoba as a teenager. This is where he met the love of his life, Meg Currie. They married and moved to Hillside Boularderie in 1970. Here they raised three children, Will, Neil and Margaret.
Murray worked various jobs as a young man, but really found the career he loved as an ironworker. As a 44-year member of the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental, and Reinforcing Ironworkers, he worked for Local 752 for 33 years and later transferred to Local 720 in 2006. He travelled all over Canada and the world for work and enjoyed every challenge he faced. Murray loved being an ironworker and often said if he were to live his life again, he wouldn’t change a thing.
Murray was an exceptional family man and he loved his wife, Meg, their three children and nine grandchildren with all his heart. He had great pride and admiration for his children and their careers. He often spoke of his eldest son Will, a piano rebuilder/tuner and never failed to tell anyone he met what an exceptional tradesman he was. He was also very proud of his son, Neil; daughter, Margaret and grandson, Dylan who all followed in his footsteps in becoming ironworkers.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Meg (Currie) Horne and his three children, Will (Mandy), Ontario, Neil (Cindy) and Margaret (Chris) Budden, Boularderie. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Gareth, Roddy, Aarden, Leland, Dylan, Courtney, Murray, Maggie and Annie; as well as his sisters, Mary O’Donnell, Ottawa, Willena, St. Steven; and brother, Duncan, St. John; cousin, Wendy Hebert and aunt, Robena Hipson.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
A celebration of his life will be held on October 14, 2017 at the Southside Boularderie Volunteer Fire Hall, 3840 Hillside Boularderie Rd. from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.
Memorial donations can be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Patient Care Fund a charity Murray supported often over the years.
