More than 100 people were in attendance at A&W’s job fair at the YMCA on Charlotte Street on Thursday to apply for a position at the restaurant’s new location opening on Prince Street in Sydney.

Although there were only 40 positions available, by 5 p.m. there were already more than 115 people were at the YMCA waiting for an interview.

Aman Jain, from India, who has been living in Sydney since September studying environmental studies at Cape Breton University, said he would like a part-time job.

“I’m new to Canada and a student too so I have an opportunity to work part time. So I’m seizing the opportunity and after school I have a lot of leisure time so it’s really good to work for something,” said Jain, who added that meeting people is also important to him.

“I’ll also get to know people and interact with them, which is important.”

Rick Doucette, 45, from Membertou has a background in construction. He said he came to the fair for an opportunity to work.

“This beats being home doing nothing, I’d rather be out doing something,” said Doucette, who went on to say he isn’t a stranger to A&W.

“I just like the food and I’d like to be on the other side of the counter for once.”

At the fair, there were jobs available for all schedules and different positions. Mohammed Almuzayn, 29, from Saudi Arabia has been living in Sydney for six years. He said he was interested in a management position but is also looking to secure permanent citizenship in Canada.

“They have many opportunities, which I need to apply to be a permanent resident. They have opportunities for a management position, which is nice,” said Almuzayn.

The new A&W restaurant will be a 2,200-square-foot standalone restaurant, featuring a drive-thru and 75-seat dining area next to the Bank of Montreal on Prince Street in Sydney.
