John passed away Oc­to­ber 8, 2017, at home af­ter a brief ill­ness.

Born in Saint John, NB on April 29, 1942, son of Mary Nealis and J. Mar­cel Gatien.

He re­ceived his un­der­grad­u­ate de­gree at U.N.B. af­ter which he at­tended Dal­housie Med­i­cal School, grad­u­at­ing in 1969. Five years res­i­dency train­ing in Hal­i­fax, Mon­treal and Bos­ton fol­lowed. He re­turned to Hal­i­fax to prac­tice in Pe­di­atric Al­lergy and Im­munol­ogy.

John par­tic­i­pated in Trav­el­ling Clin­ics from Yar­mouth to Syd­ney for over 30 years.

John is sur­vived by his wife of 50 years, Karen (nee Curry); his sons, Sean (Karen McIn­tyre), Gre­gory (Nancy Frenette) and Ge­of­frey (Glenna Camp­bell). He was the very proud Grand­fa­ther of Iain, Kathryn, and Beatrice, and step-grand­sons, Wil­liam and Jack Mul­li­gan. John is also sur­vived by his sis­ter, Ger­maine (Howard Free­land) and their chil­dren, Ben­jamin and Va­lerie.

John was a won­der­ful man who was com­mit­ted to his fam­ily and his pa­tients.

His fam­ily ex­tends a spe­cial thank you to Dr. Vic­to­ria Mitchell for her ex­cep­tional care and ded­i­ca­tion.

In lieu of flow­ers, do­na­tions to the Hal­i­fax VON, would be ap­pre­ci­ated.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Tues­day, Oc­to­ber 17, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Ox­ford St., Hal­i­fax. A re­cep­tion will fol­low the ser­vice at Cruik­shank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Wind­sor Street.
