GATIEN, John Gerard, M.D.,F.R.C.P.(C)

John passed away October 8, 2017, at home after a brief illness.

Born in Saint John, NB on April 29, 1942, son of Mary Nealis and J. Marcel Gatien.

He received his undergradu­ate degree at U.N.B. after which he attended Dalhousie Medical School, graduating in 1969. Five years residency training in Halifax, Montreal and Boston followed. He returned to Halifax to practice in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.

John participat­ed in Travelling Clinics from Yarmouth to Sydney for over 30 years.

John is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen (nee Curry); his sons, Sean (Karen McIntyre), Gregory (Nancy Frenette) and Geoffrey (Glenna Campbell). He was the very proud Grandfathe­r of Iain, Kathryn, and Beatrice, and step-grandsons, William and Jack Mulligan. John is also survived by his sister, Germaine (Howard Freeland) and their children, Benjamin and Valerie.

John was a wonderful man who was committed to his family and his patients.

His family extends a special thank you to Dr. Victoria Mitchell for her exceptiona­l care and dedication.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Halifax VON, would be appreciate­d.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford St., Halifax. A reception will follow the service at Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor Street.
