New Victoria woman wins $56,976 in chase the ace

A New Victoria woman and her family are the latest Cape Bretoners to win big at a chase the ace draw at the New Waterford Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday.

Paulette Stubbert, who won the grand prize of $56,976, said she was in disbelief after she realized her ticket was a winner.

“I thought, that it’s not me, but my son James said ‘Mom, that’s your number,’ and after he convinced me, I thought that this is going to help so much at this time of the year” said Stubbert, who added that she planned taking a day off from work on Sunday to be with her family and enjoy her winnings.

“I’m definitely taking the day off tomorrow. Someone else can work my 12-hour shift tomorrow — and Monday,” said Stubbert.

Stubbery went to the draw organized by the New Waterford legion and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank because her son James Stubbert, who came back to Cape Breton after working in Alberta, said he was interested in the event. James said the best part about winning was seeing his mother’s reaction.

“I heard screaming, and I knew it was her screaming through the crowd and I thought something was wrong,” he said.

“For me, it’s not even sinking in, but it’s so much more for her than it is for me — I’m just happy for her.”

Ruth Dupe, a member of the legion who has helped organize the draw, said Stubbert is a deserving winner.

“It’s wonderful for anyone to win that type of money -- that’s life changing, so to give that amount of money to someone, you know it’s going to change their whole life,” said Dupe.

“Today we have a perfect example of that. She brought me to tears. She’s an awesome lady and like all of us, she’s she had rocky rods along the way, and this is really going to help her.”
