CBU squads show firepower in big wins over Mount Allison.

Cape Breton University’s soccer teams remain undefeated after winning their final home games of the regular season.

And they did so with a couple of exclamation points as the Capers women cruised to an 8-0 win over Mount Allison, while the CBU men trounced their Mounties counterparts by a 7-0 score.

In the women’s match, fifthyear midfielder Tamara Brown scored three goals, while Howie Centre’s Becky Hanna scored for the first time in her four seasons as a Caper.

After the game both players credited the team’s success (100-0) to the strong relationships among teammates.

Keona Simmonds with a pair, Ciera Dispio, and Amelia Carlini also scored for the Capers. The mismatch saw CBU outshoot the Mounties 37-4. Capers keeper Rachel Yerxa earned the clean sheet.

“Everybody is on the same wavelength, we got great team chemistry and we’re all so proud of each other,” said Hanna, who indicated there is a possibility she will return for a fifth season with Cape Breton.

“We’re all just great friends and we’re playing well at the same time, so we just couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Brown, who hails from Whitby, Ont., said her Cape Breton experience gets better every year.

“It’s been great, we support each other and we’re very teambased,” said Brown, whose hat trick boosted her regular season goal total to eight, third best in the AUS behind only teammates Disipio (10) and Simmonds (9).

“The team chemistry has always been good with the Capers and I feel it just keeps getting better and better each year - we’re a close-knit group, so going into this year we knew we were going to have a good season.”

The CBU women have now clinched first place and a guaranteed spot in the conference semifinal at the AUS championships in Antigonish, Nov. 2-5.

Not to be outdone, the Capers men (9-0-1) also clinched a semifinal berth in the conference championships, to be hosted by CBU, Nov. 2-5, with their own lopsided victory over Mount Allison.

Second-year midfielder Marcus Campanile led the Capers with three goals. Max Raab, Stuart Heath, Michael Gould and New Waterford’s Jesse MacIntyre rounded out the scoring. Ben Jackson made two saves to record the shutout.

Both CBU teams are back in action next weekend when they conclude the regular season with away games against Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s.
