A Cape Breton girl has been named one of 25 winners of the Kid Food Nation’s national recipe contest.

Hannah Lynk, 11, of Sydney was flown to the Kid Food Nation’s inaugural gala in Ottawa to showcase her recipe and rub shoulders with famous Canadians.

Lynk said she couldn’t believe her rainbow parfait was among the top 25. She added that going to Ottawa was a cherry on top of the experience.

“I was surprised, excited and happy about the whole thing,” said Lynk.

Norma Lynk, Hannah’s mother, was just as surprised as her daughter when she found out she won.

“I didn’t even know Hannah entered the contest until she won it. To find out she won it was just a complete and utter shock to me,” she said.

Kid Food Nation is a cross-Canada movement that teaches kids cooking skills, gets them excited about healthy food, and gives them the tools to live a healthier life.

Lynk’s parfait, which she helped develop at the Whitney Pier Boys and Girls Club, was arranged with healthy fruit, granola and yogurt. It caught

the eye of the national judges. Norma said her favourite part of the ceremony was watching her daughter be honoured for her abilities.

“It’s kind of mind blowing. It makes you proud,” she said.

“The best part of the entire weekend was the gala and actually seeing her get her award from the health minister. It was just a ‘wow’ moment.”

Hannah’s friend, Natalie Costely, said that once Hannah got home she told Costely how much it meant to her.

“She said that when she got the award the just ran around the hotel she was staying at,” said Costely.

Lynk is continuing to work on her culinary skills.
