‘Not a whole lot on their shelves’

Shamrock Club lends helping hand to two St. Vincent de Paul charities

The president of the Shamrock Club say the shelves are low at two of the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul organizations and they are hoping with the public help to change that.

Sheldon Saccary said a trailer has been placed at the Shamrock Club in hopes of filling it with non-perishable food items and Christmas gifts.

“This is a brand-new project we are going to try this year,” he said.

“If it works out good it will become an annual event.”

Saccary said the club always gives donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul but wanted to increase its help this year.

“Both the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Reserve Mines and in Dominion have told us there is not a whole lot on their shelves,” he said.

As a result Saccary said their club came up with the idea to take an enclosed moving trailer and park it on the site to collect donations.

The trailer will be parked at the club on Commercial Street from today until Sunday and people can bring donations any time from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

“We want to see what we can do to help them over this period,” he said.

“Anyone with a donation can go into the club and they’ll come out and open the trailer.”

Saccary said before this fundraiser even started there were two anonymous donations of $100 in food each.

As well, on Saturday there will be a masquerade dance at the Shamrock Club from 9:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. Music will be by GTO.

“We are going to request

people bring a donation for the trailer in lieu of any coverage charge.”

Saccary said they encourage the public to come.

“Treat yourself to an evening of fun and help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at the same time.”

Saccary said the president of the Reserve Mines Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Sheila Nolan, and the president of the Dominion chapter, Jim Fogarty, are both appreciative.

“They said they are most grateful for the support of the Shamrock and have indicated that both depots are in great need at this time.”

If anyone has any questions they can contact the club at 902-849-2600.

The Shamrock Club works on various fundraisers for organizations and charities annually. One major fundraiser for the club, the Linda O’Leary Memorial Fundraiser, raises funds for the adopt-a-family program at the Every Women’s Centre annually. This year more than $8,200 was raised, resulting over the past eight years in more than $41,000 being raised, which so far has helped make a merrier Christmas for 3,897 children and 164 parents.
