A local society official says they are gearing up in hopes of milking the public once again. Mickey’s Original Six Society is hosting a milk drive from Nov. 2-16. Donations of powdered and canned milk may be dropped off in the Dominion Rink lobby.

“If everyone just dropped off one can of milk imagine what that would mean,” said Mickey McNeil, a member of the society. “What better way to help a family then by giving milk. Milk is something not everyone has but that everyone can use.”

The idea for the fifth annual fundraiser was the result of an appeal from the Glace Bay Food Bank, where officials had learned that some families were forced to use water on their cereal because they couldn’t afford milk.

“We have to wake up and know that this is happening in our own backyard,” McNeil said. “If it’s one child it’s one too many.”

Ruth Martell, a volunteer at the food bank, said they are always in need of milk and what Mickey’s Original Six does is wonderful.

“It’s very seldom we buy powdered milk because it’s expensive,” she said.

“Sometimes Feed Nova Scotia will send some on the truck but it’s usually very little.”

The food bank takes the powdered milk and breaks it down to smaller bags to share among the clients. Canned milk is purchased by the food bank when it’s on sale.

“It’s something we always need and we appreciate what this group does,” Martell added.
